STOP THE ABORTION BAN!
- THIS IS A SWEEPING BAN ON ABORTION IN SOUTH DAKOTA. IT THREATENS WOMEN’S LIVES.
- THE BAN ALLOWS THE GOVERNMENT TO INTRUDE INTO A DIFFICULT AND PRIVATE DECISION THAT SHOULD BE MADE BY A WOMAN, HER FAMILY AND HER DOCTOR.
- SOUTH DAKOTA VOTERS REJECTED THIS KIND OF GOVERNMENT INTRUSION IN 2006.
- THE BAN’S SO-CALLED “EXCEPTIONS” ARE FAKE AND RECKLESSLY ENDANGER WOMEN’S HEALTH.
- THE BAN WILL HAVE A CHILLING EFFECT ON DOCTORS AND THEIR ABILITY TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE MEDICAL CARE TO WOMEN.
- THE BAN PROVIDES FOR THE CRIMINAL PROSECUTION OF DOCTORS AND SENTENCES OF UP TO 10-YEARS IN JAIL.
- THE BAN REQUIRES RAPE AND INCEST VICTIMS TO REPORT THEIR NAME, PERSONAL ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER TO PUBLIC AGENCIES.
Government Intrusion into a Private Decision
- This fall, South Dakotans will vote again on a sweeping ban on abortion called Initiated Measure 11.
- In 2006, South Dakota voters spoke loud and clear and voted against this kind of extreme Government Intrusion.
- This law puts politicians and big government in between doctors, patients and their families.
- Abortion in SD is already heavily restricted. Current law requires a 24-hour waiting period, mandatory education about a woman’s options, parental notification in the case of a minor, and review of a sonogram.
Endangering Women’s Lives
- Measure 11’s vagueness recklessly endangers women’s health and lives.
- A woman would be forced to carry a pregnancy to term even if the fetus couldn’t survive on its own after delivery.
- This law threatens doctors with felony prosecution and jail time for exercising their proper medical judgment to protect a woman’s health.
