TEXAS
Voter Registration Deadline: October 6, 2008 . The application must be received in the Voter Registrar's office or postmarked 30 days before an election in order for a person to be eligible to vote in that election.
Voter Registration Drive: If volunteers plan to hand in completed voter registration applications and turn them to the county elections office, volunteers must be deputized by the state of Texas . To become deputized, one must be a registered voter, as well as attend a class at the county registrar's office. Classes are done through the specific county and details differ between each county – contact your county elections office. If volunteers do not collect completed registration forms, and simply ask voters to mail in their registration forms themselves, volunteers do not have to be deputized; however, this type of voter registration drive is not as effective. Voter registration forms can be printed from the internet onto regular white paper and photocopied. You can also request forms from county elections offices.
Where to Register: You may obtain a voter registration application at your county Voter Registrar's office, the Secretary of State's Office, libraries, many post offices, or high schools. From the secretary of state's website, you may request that they send you an official, postage-paid application. Or, you may download an application, but you will be required to affix a stamp before mailing. You may also register to vote when you apply for or renew your driver's license.
Early Voting: October 18-October 31. Once registered to vote in Texas , you can vote at your convenience beginning on the 17th day before an election and ending on the 4th day before Election Day in most elections. This is called early voting, and there are two types of early voting in Texas . Vote early in person (you don't need to vote in your precinct, you can cast your ballot at any early voting site convenient to YOU) or vote early by mail.
