Hi Everyone,
I went to the March For Women's Lives/Rights in DC on Sunday, 4/25. It was truly awesome! There had to be over 1 million wo/men & children. The mall was filled where you could not fit another person and yet for blocks & blocks, people were still streaming in and surrounding the area. The last time I went on this March, my girls, Christine & Pam and Bob came with me. The girls were around 10 & 12...they are now grown women. They both called me up wishing me well and to call them if I needed anything.
I left here at 4:15am to pick up my neighbor, Lainie, and drive over to catch the bus (which had a John!) at Sussex CC in Newton at 5am where we met some friends from D.A.S.I. (Domestic Abuse Services, Inc.), the ones that put on the Vagina Monologues. We got into DC around 10:30-11 making one stop at the Delaware House. The lines were so long, I don't think the establishments knew what was going on.
The weather was not bad and we thanked God that the rain held up. The March was marvelous but I am still healing from it. My legs, knee joints and hip hurt. The escalators on the Metro were not working (I think it was a conspiracy....LOL! ...to keep our numbers down).
I don't think that they expected this awesome turnout as it was difficult to see the gigantic plasma TV at the end of the mall, although we could hear the speakers. They needed at least one other at the other end.
I was particularly impressed with the number of young people that turned out. I had thought the young people, because of not knowing what went on before Roe vs Wade were content to the many rights that women have won...but they outnumbered us! Many were creative, playing their bongos, hand made flutes, dressed up in different gear with signs that held their messages. There was even a Santa marching for Women's Rights! There were also the protesters, which were few in comparison to our numbers. I noticed more were males.
The next day, my daughter called me. I was touched as she called me her "brave moma" and thanked me. I told her I became involved in this because of them. I wanted life better for them just as we all do for our daughters and our sons.
With Love, Cathy Weeks
