On the third day of the National Young Feminist Leadership Conference, the feminists take Capitol Hill! Hold your members of Congress accountable and educate them about the critical issues that are most important to you.
Prepare for your meeting:
Before you head to Capitol Hill, however, you need to schedule a meeting with your members of Congress for Monday, April 2. See below for a step-by-step guide.
1. Call your representatives and senators’ offices. To call directly, find your senators’ contact information at senate.gov and your representative’s number at house.gov. You can also call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask for the member by name.
2. When you reach the office, explain that you are a constituent and that you will be in Washington, DC on Monday, April 2 as part of the National Young Feminist Leadership Conference. Ask to schedule a short meeting with the member of Congress, ideally, or if he or she is not available, the women’s issues staffer. The best time to meet is after the morning issue briefing, between 12 and 4.
3. If for whatever reason you cannot schedule a meeting, don't lose hope. You can drop in on members once you are on the Hill, or you may be able to join forces with a larger group that morning.
What to expect:
On Monday morning, FMF will host an issue briefing to give you ideas and tips for meeting with your representatives and senators. Then we'll break so everyone can visit their members and grab lunch. In the afternoon, we'll have more great speakers and invite you to share how your visit went!
If you aren't able to join us for the Congressional Visit Day on Monday, we encourage you to make an appointment to see your Members of Congress in their state or district offices when you get home.
