American Association of University Women
In 2003, AAUW launched the Leadership and Training Institute, a 501(c)(3) organization within the association, to increase its commitment to these issues. Through institute programs, women and girls acquire the skills they need to succeed and assume leadership roles in their academic, professional, and personal lives. AAUW's institute now directs the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders, an event that grows in depth and popularity each year. Beyond this college-aged program, the institute will develop a breadth of programs addressing women in all stages of life.
What does AAUW's Leadership Training Institute provide?
The institute will provide multiyear programs with an educational focus on leadership growth, career advancement, economic self-sufficiency, and technical skills; educational resources; and national models. The institute will implement conferences, workshops, seminars, and courses; enhance the ability of women and girls to make a difference in their lives; and expand institutions' and neighborhoods' ability to make a difference in the lives of those who study, teach, work, and live in their communities. The institute will focus on three main program areas.
The financial literacy program helps women and girls become economically self-sufficient and financially savvy. The program addresses an intergenerational audience of girls in grades K-12, young women in colleges and universities, and adult women. K-12 girls will learn to work with and enjoy finance. Young college women will receive personal and professional guidance to increase their financial know-how and prevent high debt. Finally, adult women will become more skilled and competitive in finance-specific careers. Activities initially will occur in the Washington, D.C., area and then be replicated in AAUW branches and local schools nationwide.
The institute's leadership literacy program supports the annual National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. Designed for college and university women in campus or community leadership roles-and those who have leadership aspirations-the conference offers students an opportunity to gather the information, skills, and resources needed to embrace today's leadership challenges. Students nationwide interact with top women in the fields of leadership, finance, and technology; hone skills in leadership, advocacy, civic engagement, networking, and career planning; build relationships with peers and other women who can support their professional and personal growth; and create practical solutions to challenges on their campuses and in their communities. Additional programming will be developed for adult women.
Through its technology literacy project, the institute is developing a national model program for girls and women to promote a highly skilled, motivated, and diverse workforce in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In the pilot phase, the project links high school students with college and university faculty and students, career experts, and community leaders. This interdisciplinary program will offer technology-based learning opportunities based on societal concerns and scientific inquiry. To empower participants to take leadership roles in their schools, communities, and careers, the project integrates educational and career guidance, role models, mentoring, and community service.
