For more than 92 years, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), has been at the forefront of virtually every major battle for civil liberties and equal justice in this country. Principled and nonpartisan, the ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and brings together the country?s largest team of public interest lawyers, lobbyists, communication strategists and members and activists in the advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially for the most vulnerable in our society.
The Racial Justice Program (RJP) of the ACLU National Office in New York City invites applicants for its Summer 2013 Undergraduate Internship, which will begin in May 2013.
OVERVIEW
The Racial Justice Program aims to preserve and extend constitutional and other rights to segments of the population that historically have been denied their rights on the basis of race, ethnicity or national origin. In the area of criminal justice, RJP is dedicated to reducing the unwarranted targeting of people of color and the racially disproportionate imposition of incarceration. It has filed civil challenges to the inadequate provision of counsel to adult and juvenile indigent defendants, and sought to halt pre and post-9/11 racial profiling by law enforcement agencies.
In the area of education, the Project seeks to ensure that all children have access to quality education, regardless of race or ethnicity. RJP has undertaken advocacy, including public education and community organizing, against the school-to-prison pipeline, and has sought to promote school desegregation and affirmative action programs. RJP also has advocated before international human rights bodies on behalf of formerly incarcerated people and people displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
Interns will work with an experienced team of racial justice attorneys in the ACLU's National Office in New York City on a broad range of issues from across the country, particularly in the areas of criminal justice and education.
The internship requires an 8 to 12 week commitment. The internship is full-time or part-time, with weekly hours that are negotiable. The number of interns accepted varies. Since this is an unpaid internship, students are highly encouraged to seek funding from outside sources. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study stipends or course credit.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The internship is designed to provide interns with the opportunity to learn about public interest law, with a focus on populations whose rights have been denied on the basis of race, ethnicity or national origin. Interns will work with the Racial Justice team, and gain hands on experience on a range of significant issues and projects including:
Developing web-based informational updates, including writing for the ACLU Blog of Rights.
Conducting factual research.
Handling written and telephone inquiries from persons seeking legal assistance.
Assisting in the maintenance of case files and compiling of press files.
Assisting in the production of complaints and briefs.
Other projects as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
This internship is open to students who have completed their first year of college, and who are enrolled in an undergraduate program for communications, political science, or sociology. Applicants must possess:
A strong interest in and familiarity with racial-justice and civil-liberties issues.
Excellent research, writing and communication skills.
Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and web-based research.
Strong organizational skills and administrative experience in an office setting, preferred.
The ability and initiative to see projects through to completion.
