SUMMER 2013 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
NOTICE TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
American Civil Liberties Union Foundation The Center for Justice, New York, N.Y.

For more than 92 years, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), has been at the forefront of virtually every major battle for civil liberties and equal justice in this country. Principled and nonpartisan, the ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and brings together the country's largest team of public interest lawyers, lobbyists, communication strategists and members and activists in the advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially for the most vulnerable in our society. The Center for Justice of the ACLU's National Office in New York City invites applicants for the Summer 2013 Undergraduate Internship, which will begin in May 2013.

OVERVIEW

The Center for Justice is focused on the problems in the U.S. criminal justice system, including the treatment of prisoners, the death penalty and the policies of over-incarceration that have led the United States to imprison more people than any other country in the world. Directed by Vanita Gupta, the Center for Justice includes the National Prison Project, the Criminal Law Reform Project and the Capital Punishment Project, as well as the Initiative to End Mass Incarceration and its project on the Militarization of Policing in America.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

The Summer 2013 Undergraduate Internship requires a 12-16 week commitment. The internship is full-time or part-time, with weekly hours that are negotiable. The number of interns accepted varies. Since this is an unpaid internship, students are highly encouraged to seek funding from outside sources. Arrangements can be made with the educational institution for work/study stipend or course credit.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside the Center for Justice team. They will also learn about building and supporting strategic legislative and advocacy campaigns. Work will include:

Documenting and tracking communications received from law enforcement agencies and the National Guard regarding the collection, maintenance, and use of military equipment, resources, and strategies relating to counterdrug, SWAT, and other police operations. Supporting efforts to develop advocacy strategies on reforming the militarization of policing in the U.S.
Assisting with the production and distribution of advocacy materials.
Conducting factual research and writing.
Other projects as assigned.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
