Summary
The National Women's Law Center (NWLC) seeks an energetic, detail-oriented intern with an interest in media, public policy, and women?s issues to provide support to NWLC?s Media Office in the Communications Department. The intern would work with Communications staff on media monitoring and analysis, maintaining press lists, writing press documents, and media research projects. The intern must be available to work part-time (20 hours per week/minimum) during the spring semester with flexible start and end dates between approximately January and June 2013.
The Organization
The National Women's Law Center is a non-profit organization that has been working since 1972 to advance and protect women's legal rights. The Center focuses on major policy areas of importance to women and their families including economic security, education, employment, health, and reproductive rights, with special attention given to the concerns of low-income women. The NWLC office is an extremely friendly environment with many opportunities to learn and make professional connections with staff members that work in many different issue areas.
Intern Duties and Responsibilities
The Media intern supports the Communications department with a variety of media projects and activities, including helping to monitor news coverage of NWLC and assisting with the development of a quarterly media analysis report. The intern will also help research information on reporters and their beats and maintain press lists. Additionally, the intern will help monitor the blogging community and draft blog posts in response to timely issues in the blogosphere. The Media intern may also be needed to assist with other general media efforts to support the work of the Center. S/he will attend some planning and strategy meetings to learn about various communications approaches.
Successful interns are proactive, seek out assignments, ask questions, and attend events which provide the opportunity to network with NWLC staff and others in the field.
Qualifications
Applicants should have an interest in media and public policy, strong writing skills and an eye for detail. Experience with Microsoft Excel and social networking, and those pursuing a degree in journalism or communications are preferred.
The intern must be detail oriented and a self-starter. S/he must have the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and complete assignments by specified deadlines with speed and accuracy. S/he must have a commitment to progressive women?s issues.
NWLC internships are unpaid; NWLC will work with students and their universities to provide college credit for the internship.
