The Statewide Legislative Director is a senior
strategist who advocates policy positions
representing Planned Parenthood before the Florida
legislature and state Executive branch agencies.
The Director serves as the organization’s primary
contact with members of the state legislature, key
legislative and administration staffers, and
coalition partners. The Director leads the
development and execution of a coordinated state
plan that maximizes the resources and
effectiveness of all partners on legislative
affairs, advocacy and electoral campaigns. This
position is based in West Palm Beach and travels
to Tallahassee, Florida during legislative
session.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
-Lobbies members of state legislature and
their staff on Planned Parenthood’s policy issues,
including supporting Planned Parenthood’s role as
a health care provider, and related legislation
and regulations and serves as Planned Parenthood’s
"voice” at the state Capitol.
-Writes legislative analysis, summaries and
talking points on Planned Parenthood issues for
members of legislature, their staff, affiliates
and coalition partners.
-Monitors legislative and regulatory
developments and activities and provides Planned
Parenthood affiliates with the latest information
regarding legislative and regulatory activity,
including policy recommendations.
-Communicates, coordinates and strategizes
with coalition partners; represents Planned
Parenthood's positions in statewide coalition
meetings and works to build consensus on issues.
-Serves as a legislative and electoral
spokesperson with media and develops collateral
materials as needed for related communications
work.
-Manages development of candidate
questionnaires and candidate endorsement program
and makes endorsement recommendations to the
Board.
-Develops timelines and budgets for
assigned programs and ensure that tasks are
completed on time and within budget.
-Defines, tracks, measures and reports on
the progress of initiatives against goals.
-Supervises the Government Relations
Manager and consultants.
-Supervises volunteers and interns.
-Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
-Four to eight years of relevant,
progressively responsible work experience.
-Ability to cultivate strong working
relationships with elected officials, executive
agency staff, candidates for office, coalition
partners and media.
-Superior research, editing, presentation,
analytical and writing skills, in multiple lengths
and formats and to multiple audiences.
-Energetic, creative, motivated, a self-
starter, and able to function productively and
effectively with a high degree of autonomy
-Commitment to inter- and intra-agency
teamwork.
-Ability to set priorities and organize
concurrent projects, meet deadlines, handle
pressure, manage multiple projects and time
effectively, exercise independent judgment and
assume responsibility for reliable follow through.
-Ability to be a team player as well as a
leader.
-Ability to gracefully manage a high level
of stress and multiple projects while meeting
deadlines.
-Commitment to the mission of Planned
Parenthood.
-Must be able to travel as needed and work
evenings and weekends as required.
