Duties/Position Summary:
As an armed Police Officer, incumbent is responsible for law and order, enforcing Federal and appropriate State, City, and local criminal codes and VA Directives and Regulations in the physical protection of patients, visitors and employees; the protection of property of the United States Government and personal property of persons on VA property; the protection of the civil rights of all individuals while on VA controlled property; and in the preservation of a peaceful environment requisite to the operation of the medical treatment programs. Incumbent conducts preliminary investigations, obtains and properly processes physical evidence, seeks out witnesses, interviews complainants, victims, witnesses and suspects; obtains written statements and prepares cases for prosecution. As an officer with prescribed powers of arrest for violation of federal offenses, he/she observes all activity occurring on VA property and is constantly alert to acts of suspicious nature; immediately responds to reports of a crime or a crime-in-progress, and intervenes to abort the criminal act or to investigate and initiate appropriate actions. He/she performs apprehensions, restraints or arrests; issues traffic citations and federal violation notices; reports fire and safety hazards detected and takes immediate action; and is responsive to situations requiring immediate and courteous assistance to patients, visitors and employees. Possesses expertise in the use of unarmed defense and offender restraint as well as non-lethal chemical irritant projector weapon to take action. This is a bargaining unit position.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
(1) As a condition of employment, must qualify to be issued a firearm and semi-annually with assigned firearm, annually with an expandable Side Handle Baton, maintain a valid State or Commonwealth Driver?s license and pass annual physical and psychological assessment. Applicant must be able to possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 968, as amended (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9). |
